Emma's Big Owie

Emma had her first big owie today. This morning as she was running around, Emma tripped over her own feet, fell, and hit her head on the corner of a speaker. Kelley and I took her to the hospital. At this point, Emma seemed to be doing well and did not mind the ice on her head. The doctor reviewed her owie and said she saw no sign of any concusion, just a laceration. The doctor then stated that she thought she should have one stitch just to make sure there is no scar. That is about the time I got nervous, but not Emma. They cleaned the area and then applied a cream and bandage for about fifteen minutes to numb the area. Emma did not mind and seemed to enjoy the whole process. The photo to the left is Emma waiting while the cream numbed the laceration. She ate grapes and cauliflower and talked to nurses while the cream did went to work.

After about fifteen minutes, two nurses and a doctor came in to give her the one stitch. One nurse held Emma steady while the other nurse and doctor put the stitch in the lacerated area. I would think that this would scare any two year old, but not Emma. The whole time she talked about her friends, Cinderella, the color pink, and her shoes. The nurses and doctors said she was the easiest two year old to ever work with. It went so well that they put a second stitch in just so there would be no chance of scar. Emma did very well and later went outside to play. When she came in hours later and saw the stitches, she began to cry. She says she does not like her owie. We were very proud of Emma and how well she did. The doctor said there should not be a scar and the stitches come out in a week.
